Amid speculation over Tristan Thompson and Maralee Nichols’ child support settlement, the NBA star’s baby mom is setting the record straight. According to Nichols, the Sacramento Kings player has yet to provide support for his son despite promising to be on board to “raise” him.
Thompson, 30, confirmed in January 2022 that he is the father of Nichols’ son, born in December 2021. “Today paternity test results reveal that I fathered a child with Maralee Nichols. I take full responsibility for my actions,” he wrote in a statement via Instagram at the time. The athlete’s confirmation came after weeks of denying rumors that he fathered his third child with the former personal trainer while still in a relationship with his now ex, Khloé Kardashian. After coming clean, Thompson then revealed that he intended to continue being a part of his son’s life. “Now that the paternity is established, I look forward to amicably raising our son,” he said. Less than a month later, however, it appears that no effort has been made to honor that promise.
According to a spokesperson for Nichols, the NBA star “did nothing” to support his son despite reports claiming he would have to pay child support. “Despite reports to the contrary, Tristan Thompson has done nothing to support his son,” Nichols’ rep Harvey Englander told Page Six on Feb. 14, 2022. Englander went on to note that Thompson didn’t even not yet met his son. “He made no attempt to meet their son and provided no financial assistance,” the rep confirmed.
The statement comes after a Hollywood Life report claimed that Thompson could end up paying up to thousands in child support payments to Nichols, on top of the child support payments he is already responsible for with Kardashian and his son. ex-girlfriend Jordan Craig. The NBA star shares daughter True Thompson, born in 2018, with Kardashian and welcomed son Prince Thompson with Craig in 2016.
New York marriage attorney Morghan Leia Richardson previously told Hollywood Life that Thompson could pay between $34,000 and $40,000 a month for her son with Nicols. “In reviewing child support, the court will look at the monthly incomes of both parents and the amount of time the child spends with each parent,” the lawyer said. “All income including cash/salaries, tips, commissions, bonuses, unemployment benefits, interest income, dividend income, rental income, insurance payments – this is all fair for calculating child support.”
“For awards where the parties earn extremely high incomes, such as Tristian, the court will insert the numbers into the support calculator, but will also consider several other factors,” Richardson added. “An argument for a larger price tag would be to ensure that the child has the same or similar lifestyle in both households.”
Richardson went on to note, however, that Thompson might end up paying a little less since he’s already paying child support. “Usually when a parent is already paying child support for another child, that amount reduces the income available to pay child support later. Because Tristan is paying child support for other children, that will be a factor in determining how much child support he will pay for that child,” the attorney explained. “Reports show his income is around $10 million, so based on that figure and the report that he pays $40,000 a month for his son, when I run the calculator, I get an estimate $34,000 a month.”
Obviously, it remains to be seen if Nichols’ son will receive anything close to this, but the possibility is there.
