JPS organizes an information session on guardianship

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson Public School District (JPS) and the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers’ Project will host an information session on Monday, July 18.

The meeting will be held in the school board meeting room at 621 South State Street in downtown Jackson from 5:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The session will share information about guardianship. Participants will also learn the legal requirements for registration by anyone other than birth parents. Information will also be provided on an upcoming free legal clinic to establish the necessary guardianships.

Larrissa Moore, General Counsel at JPS, said they were eager to share this information.

“We have a lot of families in our district who need to get guardianship to have the legal right to make decisions for the kids,” Moore said. “We just want to be there to help.”

In order to enroll the child in school, Moore said guardians would need legal documents or some form of custody to begin JPS enrollment.

Registration for the district is currently open for the 2022-23 school year.
