A man accused of murdering his ex and their four-year-old son to avoid paying child support has gone on trial in Germany.
The 25-year-old defendant, who under local privacy laws was only known as Anil G, allegedly stabbed the woman and their child before hiding their bodies in a river.
Cologne prosecutors say the defendant arranged a reunion with his ex after asking for money to help raise their son.
But instead of agreeing to pay, they allege he stabbed them both to death.
Anil G faces two murder charges when the trial begins at Cologne District Court this month.
His victims were named as his ex, Derya S, 24, and their four-year-old son, Kian.
The bodies of the couple were discovered last November by walkers along the Rhine.
Derya, who was training as a remedial teacher, was first discovered in the water at the port of Niehl. Kian’s body was not found in the water for another day.
Derya’s father, Ersin, 56, is a co-plaintiff in the case.
He reportedly refused the judge’s offer to leave the room before photographs of the bodies of his daughter and grandson were shown.
“I was sentenced to life, I will live my whole life with this pain,” he said, according to German newspaper Bild.
Derya was reportedly strong-willed and cheerful, with her father saying, “She was funny, friendly and entertaining.”
Speaking of his grandson, he said: “He adored me and I love him.”
The trial is ongoing.
