Britney Spears has been pushing for greater transparency in court hearings over the legal arrangement that has run her life and finances for more than a decade, and in doing so, appeared to endorse the #FreeBritney movement.

Since Spears’ split in 2007, her father, Jamie (known legally as James Spears), has been primarily the head of a Guardianship, meaning the 38-year-old must seek permission before taking important decisions about his affairs, a setup that is usually reserved for the elderly and infirm with little hope of recovery. It is believed he will receive around $ 130,000 (£ 97,000) per year from Spears’ estate for his role.

After Jamie Spears resigned in 2019 due to illness, the role was taken over by independent professional conservator, Jodi Montgomery. Spears is calling for his father to be permanently removed from his post and for wealth management firm Bessemer Trust to be permanently appointed as the custodian of his $ 57.4million (£ 42.5million) fortune. Aside from Spears’ objection to her father’s position, she called the arrangement “voluntary.”

Jamie Spears has always sought to keep hearings related to his daughter’s cases sealed, citing the inclusion of private medical information and information about her two children. Yet the star’s attorney, Samuel Ingham III, has now said Spears was “vehemently opposed to his father’s effort to keep his legal struggle hidden in the closet as a family secret.”

Ingham said: “At this point in her life where she is trying to regain some personal autonomy, Britney welcomes and appreciates the enlightened support of her many fans.”

Spears’ attorney countered Jamie’s ongoing claims that the #FreeBritney movement is led by conspiracy theorists. Ingham wrote: “Far from being a conspiracy theory or a ‘joke’ as James would have told the media, this review is largely a reasonable and even predictable result of James’ aggressive use of the procedure. sealing over the years to minimize the amount of material information made available to the public.

Ingham said such a strategy of secrecy may have had “merits” when Spears was trying to restart his career, but it was no longer the case: Spears announced an “indefinite work disruption” in January 2019 “The sealing motion is supposed to be being brought in by her father to ‘protect’ Britney’s interests, but she categorically opposes it,” he wrote.

Ingham argued that when Jamie Spears was appointed Conservative he “gave up a lot of his privacy in how he wields that power. Transparency is essential for this court to gain and maintain public confidence in protective proceedings such as this. In this case, it is no exaggeration to say that the whole world is watching.

The next hearing regarding his guardianship will take place in October.
