Britney Spears to Fans on Guardianship: ‘You Saved My Life’

Pop icon Britney Spears has spoken directly to her fans for the first time since being released from the controversial conservatorship that controlled her life for nearly 14 years.

In a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday night, Spears, wearing low-rise black shorts and a floral crop top, thanked fans and the #FreeBritney movement for raising awareness when her “voice was muted and threatened for so long”.

“You rock,” she said. “I honestly think you saved my life.”

Legions of fans celebrated with cheers and showers of pink confetti last Friday outside the downtown Los Angeles courthouse where a judge first ended a conservatorship first imposed in 2008.

“It’s a very long time to be in a situation you don’t want to be in,” the 39-year-old said in the two-minute video filmed on a sunny terrace.

Speculation had abounded about the star’s future plans.

She hasn’t given an interview in years, rarely makes public appearances and last performed in October 2018 – tied as she was to a lifestyle largely governed by her father, Jamie.

The family should be ‘in jail’

In her video, she said she now appreciates the “little things”, like “seeing money for the first time, being able to buy candles” – adding that she wanted to be “an advocate for people with real handicaps and real illnesses”.

“I’m just honestly grateful for every day and being able to have my car keys and being able to be independent as a woman and having an ATM card,” she said.

With the ruling, the “Baby One More Time” singer regained majority control over a multimillion-dollar estate that had been run by the trusteeship, which she described as abusive.

In the caption to her post, Spears called out her family members and “all the bad things they’ve done to me that they should all be in jail for.”

“It still amazes me every day, I wake up to how my family and guardianship could have done what they did to me…it was demoralizing and degrading!!!!”

Most of what the public knows about Spears – who shot to world fame as a teenager before a high-profile mental breakdown saw her become a paparazzi punching bag – comes from her quirky Instagram account.

For years the bubbly star posted regularly, sometimes uploading videos of herself twirling or doing dance routines, other times poetic about hopes and dreams.

Another post on Tuesday hinted at new plans Spears may harbor recently.

“I’m thinking of having another baby!!!” the mother-of-two shared with her 36.4 million Instagram followers, more than 1.3 million of whom encouraged her with a “like”.
