Britney Spears’ journey from teen phenom to guardianship

A Los Angeles court will discuss Friday whether to end the legal arrangement, called conservatorship, that has controlled Britney Spears’ personal and business affairs since 2008.

Here’s a timeline of key events in the life of Spears, now 39.

1992 – Cast on the TV show “The Mickey Mouse Club” with Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling.

1997 – Signs a record contract at age 15.

1998 – At age 16, she released her first single “…Baby One More Time”. In 1999, her debut album of the same name topped the charts in 15 countries.

2000 – Second studio album ‘Oops!…I Did It Again’ breaks records. Spears confirms she is dating Justin Timberlake.

2001 – Spears performs as a Super Bowl halftime guest and releases her third album.

2002 – Spears stars in her first film, ‘Crossroads.’ Her relationship with Timberlake ends.

2004 – Spears marries childhood friend Jason Alexander in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas. The marriage is annulled three days later. Nine months later, she married dancer Kevin Federline.

2005 – Birth of his son Sean Preston. Spears wins her first and only Grammy Award for “Toxic.”

2006 – Second son Jayden James is born. Two months later, Spears files for divorce.

2007 – Spears enters and leaves rehab twice within days, shaves her head at a salon in Los Angeles, and returns to rehab. Pursued by the paparazzi, her behavior becomes increasingly erratic and Spears loses custody of her two sons. She releases a fifth studio album and performs “Gimme More” at the MTV Video Music Awards but seems dazed.

2008 – Spears is twice hospitalized in psychiatric detention and placed under judicial guardianship in which her father Jamie Spears and an attorney take control of her personal and professional affairs. The nature of his mental illness is not disclosed. In December, her comeback album “Circus” was released and in 2009 she embarked on a world tour to promote it.

2011 – Spears releases her seventh studio album and embarks on another tour.

2012 – Spears joins the US version of ‘The X Factor’ TV show as a judge.

2013 – Spears begins a two-year residency in Las Vegas and releases her eighth studio album. The residency is extended for two years.

2016-2018 – Spears releases her ninth studio album, takes part in the ‘Piece of Me’ world tour and announces another Las Vegas residency for 2019. She last performed in public in October 2018 at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

2019 – Spears announces an “indefinite work hiatus” and cancels her planned Las Vegas residency, citing concerns about her father’s health. She walks into a mental health facility saying she’s taking “a little me time”. The #FreeBritney movement is started by fans who believe Spears is being held against her will under guardianship.

August 2020 – A lawyer for Spears requests that the singer’s father be replaced as curator. Jamie Spears calls the #FreeBritney movement a “joke”.

February 2021 – “Framing Britney Spears” documentary airs, drawing attention to the conservatorship. Spears says she was “embarrassed by the light they put me in” and cried for two weeks. A lawyer for Jamie Spears notes that the singer never filed for an end to conservatorship.

Jun.17 – Spears says she “has no idea” if she’ll ever get back on stage and is “having fun right now”.

June 23 – In an emotional public address in court, Spears calls the conservatorship abusive and humiliating and says she wants her life back. She says she was forced into a mental health facility in 2019, given strong medication and wants a contraceptive device removed.

Jul.5 – Spears’ manager of 25 years quits, saying the singer has indicated she wants to retire.

July 14 – Spears wins the right to choose her own attorney for the first time and tearfully pleads with the court to oust her father and charge him with abuse of guardianship.

Jul.26 – Spears’ new lawyer calls for Jamie Spears to be removed from his post as curator, calling the arrangement “increasingly toxic”.

Aug.12 – Jamie Spears says he’s ready to step down as custodian of the singer’s $60million estate, but gives no timetable.

September 7 – By surprise, Jamie Spears files a petition to end the conservatorship.

Sep.12 – Britney Spears and her boyfriend of four years, Sam Asghari, announce their engagement.

Sep.24 – Documentary ‘Controlling Britney Spears’ reports that Jamie Spears monitored the singer’s phone and texts and that a listening device was placed in her bedroom.

September 29 – The judge suspends Jamie Spears as conservator and sets up a hearing to discuss ending the entire conservatorship. The singer’s lawyer says he will investigate Jamie Spears for guardianship abuse.

October 4 – Britney Spears thanks the #FreeBritney movement for their support.

Nov. 2 – Britney Spears’ lawyer files court documents seeking to question Jamie Spears under oath about how the pop singer’s money was spent during the conservatorship.

November 12 – The Los Angeles court will hold a hearing to discuss whether to end the conservatorship.
