Britney Spears has asked a judge to end her father’s guardianship at a hearing next week so she can marry with a prenuptial agreement, a motion filed by her lawyer said on Wednesday.
The American pop singer, who described the controversial 13-year-old arrangement that gives Jamie Spears control of her affairs as “abuse“, the recently announced commitment to her boyfriend Sam Asghari.
Jaime Spears deposit a petition last month for an end to Britney’s conservatorship, saying it recognizes the singer “now believes she can manage her own life.”
According to Wednesday’s filing, Britney is “in the process of hiring a family law attorney to draft a prenuptial agreement,” which would require the approval of any remaining conservatives.
“Given that Ms. Spears’ relationship with this curator (her father) is broken, the continued involvement of Mr. Spears would impede the ability to negotiate and conclude a contract which all can agree is in the best interest of Mrs. Spears,” he said.
The petition calls on the Los Angeles District Court judge to “suspend Mr. Spears” at the next hearing, set for September 29.
He is proposing a short-term temporary guardian who can take over from his father and possibly approve a prenuptial agreement before the entire guardianship structure can be completed later this year.
Spears and Asghari met in 2016 when they co-starred in a music video for her single Slumber party.
Spears, 39, has two children with her former husband, rapper Kevin Federline, and had a brief Las Vegas wedding to childhood friend Jason Alexander that was called off after just 55 hours.
The star shot to fame as a teenager with hits like Baby one more timebut suffered a very public breakdown in 2007, attacking a paparazzo’s car at a gas station.
This resulted in her being placed under court-ordered guardianship, largely governed by her father.
As well as paving the way for his upcoming marriage, Wednesday’s petition said Jamie Spears’ removal was urgent because “every day Mr. Spears clings to his post is another day of anguish and hurt. for his daughter”.
She has previously alleged in court that she was prevented from having an IUD removed, despite wanting more children.
